A Guide to Hair Transplants

Transplanting of hair is a commonly requested cosmetic procedure. The procedure has a surgical element to it. It is performed in order to restore hair to a bodily area that is prematurely or undesirably losing hair. The process involves transplanting hair from a region of the body that is naturally dense in hair and implanting this hair at the deficient surface. The ‘donor’ area is usually the posterior region of the head and the upper neck. This region is chosen because it is fairly resistant to the balding process, the hair here will re-grow fairly quickly, and the area is dense in follicles of hair. Hair transplantation is a much more successful hair restoration procedure, when compared to the pharmaceutical methods that are advertised. Who Can Use Hair Transplantation?

Hair transplants are most popularly used by men to treat the classic pattern of baldness seen in men. Older men use it to look younger and young men who are balding prematurely use it to avoid looking older than their age. In addition to the head, this procedure can be used to treat hair loss of the eyebrows, to make the eyelashes thicker, to add facial hair in men who have scanty facial hair due to genetic reason; transplantation can also be performed to add hair onto anybody surface one may desire. Hair transplantations also have an application in treating medical conditions like alopecia, or it can be used in burn victims.

Hair Transplantation Procedure

FUT - Follicular Unit Transplantation (also known as Strip Harvesting)

Here, strips of follicle rich skin are surgically removed from the pre-determined source. Next, the hair with its follicles needs to be very carefully separated from the skin. Any unwanted tissue attached to the hair is removed and disposed of. While an assistant is isolating the follicles, the surgeon closes the site from where the strip of skin was removed. The surgical wounds will be fully healed in roughly 3 weeks.

Follicular Unit Transplantation

FUE - Follicular Unit Extraction

In this procedure, instead of removing strips of skin, the follicles of hair are very carefully and meticulously extracted. A local anesthetic is used during this procedure so the patient doesn’t feel any pain. The individual hair follicles are extracted using highly specialized surgical equipment. This procedure takes much longer, but the advantage is that there will be no scar on the scalp as is seen in strip harvesting. Additionally, the recovery time is reduced to almost half.

Advice

The patient is advised to avoid the following until the surgical wounds are fully healed – vigorous exercise, hot baths, steam rooms, saunas, and direct exposure to sunlight.
